I watch a lot of Ghibli films, Howl’s Moving Castle will always be my comfort movie, but Spirited Away just holds a special place in all of our hearts. I know there are probably plenty of other soot sprite pillows out there, but I had so much blanket yarn that I needed to do something with it.
Soot Sprite Throw Pillow Pattern

Level: Beginner
Materials:
Bernat Blanket Yarn (black)
Worsted weight yarn in pink/blue/yellow/white
6mm hook
4mm hook
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers
Poly-fil stuffing
Abbreviations:
MC = magic circle/magic ring
sc = single crochet
inc = increase (put two stitches in the same space)
dc = double crochet
st/sts = stitch/stitches
slst = slip stitch
BLO = back loop only
The body portion is worked in the round, so when you reach the end of the row, do not chain one and start the new row. Just continue to work it in the round.
Body (make two):
Start by making a MC and sc 6. With the Black Blanket Yarn (6)
R1: Inc in every sc 6x total (12)
R2: Inc in the first st and sc in the next. Repeat 6x (18)
R3: Inc, put 1 sc in the next two sts. Repeat. (24)
R4: Inc, sc in the next three sts. Repeat (30)
R5: Inc, sc in the next four sts. Repeat (36)
R6: Inc, sc in the next five sts. Repeat (42)
R7: Inc, sc in the next six sts. Repeat (48)
R8: Inc, sc in the next seven sts. Repeat (54)
R9: Inc, put 1 sc in the next two sts. Repeat until end of round.
R10: Inc, put 1 sc in each of the next eleven sts. Repeat until end of round.
R11: Inc, put 1 sc in each of the next twelve sts. Repeat.
R12-13: sc around evenly.
Do not cut yarn and tie off on the second panel. You are going to be securing the two panels together with sc so just leave one still attached to your skein of yarn.
Eyes (make two):
Grab your white worsted weight yarn and make a MC, placing 6sc in the mc.
R1: Inc, 6x around (12)
R2: Inc, sc into the next st, repeat 6x. (18)
R3: Inc, put one sc in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat. (24)
R4: Inc, sc in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat. (30)
R5: Inc. sc in each of the next 4 sts. Repeat. (36)
R6: Inc, sc in each of the next 5 sts. Repeat. (42)
Leave a long tail for sewing, cut yarn, and tie off.
Pupils (make two):
(black blanket yarn)
Start with a MC and place 6sc in the mc.
Inc 6x (12)
cut yarn and tie off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Stars (make 3, one in each – pink, blue, yellow):
Begin with another MC.
SC, DC, Ch 2, DC. Repeat 4 more times.
Attach to the first sc with a slst and pull the mc tail tight to secure.
Cut a long tail for sewing, ch 1, pull yarn through to tie off.
ASSEMBLY:
Body: Take your two black body pieces and line them up. Here you have the option to just sc the two sets of stitches together, or only do BLO sc to attach. I personally chose the BLO option, but it will look fine either way.
BLO Sc the panels together until you have about 3 inches left. Stuff with Poly-fil or your stuffing of choice, pack the stuffing in there tight, and continue to stitch the panels together. Slst back to the beginning st and tie off. Leave a tail so you can sew it in and hide it in the pillow.
Eyes: take the pupils and sew them onto the whites of the eyes a little off center. You want them to look slightly cross-eyed upon finishing. Once your pupils are sewn on, sew the whole of the eyes on the front of the pillow body. Placement takes a few tries to get right, but you will want about an inch of space separating the eyes and a little higher than you think is necessary.
Stars: Sew the stars on the body underneath one of the eyes and place in a staggered position.
You’re finished! Now you have a little soot sprite buddy to watch Ghibli films with <3
